A Look at Skype for
Residential & Small Business Use

What is SKYPE?

Skype is a little piece of software that lets you talk through the Internet … for free. You can talk to anyone else on Skype, wherever they are in the world, and it won’t cost you a thing. Not bad, eh? If the people you want to talk to aren’t on Skype yet, you can still make pretty cheap calls to landlines and mobile phones around the world using SkypeOut.

10 Reasons to use SKYPE

  1. Call friends for free, wherever they are in the world
  2. Download SKYPE for free. It is easy to install
  3. 60 million callers already love SKYPE and more are joining daily. Your friends/colleagues/lients may already be using it.
  4. Make long distance calls at local rates to landlines and mobiles with SkypeOut
  5. Stay connected with SKYPE VoiceMail
  6. Forward calls to a landline or mobile phone, for the cost of a SkypeOut call.
  7. Send instant messages when you are tired of talking.
  8. Make a conference call for free with up to 5 people.
  9. See when people you want to call are available.
  10. Transfer files.

What You Need

  • A PC running Windows or Linux (or a Macintosh running OS-X)
  • A sound card, speakers (or headphones) and microphone. Or a headset with microphone.
  • An Internet connection, preferably broadband or cable, although SKYPE will work on a dial-up connection.

SkypeOut

If this was a perfect world, there’d be no yodelling, we wouldn’t be ashamed of our love handles and everyone would be using Skype to talk for free.

Unfortunately the world is far from perfect, and not everyone has Skype yet. That’s why we have SkypeOut, a low cost way to make calls from Skype to friends who still use those traditional landlines or mobile phones. That means calling anyone, anywhere in the world at local rates.

Just as an example, when you use SkypeOut to call within the United Kingdom, you can save up to 45% per minute compared to regular calling through Tele2 UK.

SkypeIn

With SkypeIn, you can get your own, regular phone number. So if your friends who aren’t using Skype want to call you by dialing a regular number, you can still receive the call in Skype. No matter where you are.

So, if you have a London-based SkypeIn number, but you’re living somewhere in the suburbs of Paris, your London area friends - or anyone! - can just dial your SkypeIn number, and your Skype on the other side of the Channel starts ringing... and your friends are only paying whatever their phone company charges them for making a phone call to London.
